Farm Gate Farm Shop has come a long way since the Parker-Nicholls family bought the 65-acre plot in 2005. From what was a barren field with no gateway, track, or buildings, The Baggins has grown into a productive, bustling farm, business, and home. Originally starting out in farming free-range pork and lamb, Steve & Christine were frustrated with the restrictions placed on commercial farmers regarding the welfare of their animals.
Stepping away from the world of commercial meat production, they scaled down their herds and began to sell their free-range meat at local farmers markets, slowly taking on accompanying ranges from local suppliers to compliment their meat. Over time, this developed into a wide range of local, organic, and artisan products being sold, and the launch of Farm Gate Farm Shop in 2018. Our on-farm shop opened in 2022, serving both the local community and nationwide delivery with over 750 products available.
While our business has changed a lot in the last 20 years, our ethos has not – Provide the best quality produce possible.
We believe in quality, local, and artisan produce. By rearing all of our pork, chicken, and lamb on farm, we can ensure the highest quality welfare, as well as reduce our CO2 emissions by not importing meat. We work closely with local, artisan producers, so when you buy from us, you’re not just supporting Farm Gate, but also independent businesses.
Since opening our farm gates to the public, our dedication to quality and sustainability has been recognised, culminating in us being awarded Best Family Run Farm Shop in North Yorkshire 2023 and Best Fine Meats Retailer in North Yorkshire 2023. We were also shortlisted for the National Farm Shop & Deli Awards 2024, being recognised as one of the top 7 small farm shops in the country.
We are also a member of numerous fine food cooperation’s, including Yorkshire Mark, Deliciously Yorkshire, and The Guild of Fine Foods, ensuring our range only includes the finest quality produce.
We’re committed to being as sustainable a business as possible. Since 2024, our farm shop is powered by 100% renewable energy from solar and wind power on our agricultural sheds on our farm.
We also aim to keep our single-use plastics to a minimum, selling all of our meat, cheese, and dried goods in plastic free packaging, as well as all our Organic milk and cream in glass bottles. All our dried goods, toiletries, and eco-cleaning products are available for refill, again, reducing single-use plastics.
